Type of Braces

Braces are used by your orthodontist to deliver gentle forces to teeth to help them move to a better position, which will improve the look and feel of your smile.

Metal Braces:

Metal brackets can be silver or golden color. The golden brackets look a bit more "jewelry-like" and are often a popular choice with young women. Metal brackets are very strong and can withstand most types of treatment. Most traditional metal braces require an elastic o-shaped rubber band, called a ligature to hold the arch wire onto the bracket. Sometimes orthodontists use metal tie wires (little wires which are twisted around the bracket) in place of elastic ligatures. The braces have a coloured ligature and children usually love it.

Ceramic Braces:

Ceramic brackets are made of composite materials. They are very strong and generally do not stain. The ligatures (tiny rubber bands) that hold the arch wire on to the ceramic brackets are often white or clear. These are tooth coloured braces placed on the front surface of the teeth. The ligatures are changed each time you get an adjustment - usually, monthly. Braces can actually be fun for teenagers and you can effectively introduce a couple of solutions for the fashion dilemma and dread of sporting tin grins in school. The introduction of ceramic braces with colored ties might just be the right thing you need to convince them to get braces. Not only will they be able to wear braces with multi-hued designs or pick out their favorite colors, gone are the tin grin look that kids usually like to pick on. Ceramic braces with colored ties are perfect solutions for teenagers who are fashion conscious and would want to incorporate their own unique style and personality in the braces. The ceramic braces with colored ties can be regularly changed on a monthly basis, which means they can pick out different colors every time they visit the dentist for adjustments.

Lingual/Invisible Braces:

Lingual (meaning tongue side of the teeth) braces were invented in 1979. This is the most esthetic system of braces available. The braces are placed at the back side of the teeth i.e the lingual surface and hence the name. This system requires extreme precision and expertise and is different from regular braces. Anyone with cosmetic concerns, from models, actors, business professionals to your next-door neighbor, can benefit from Esthetic Orthodontics and this "Invisible" revolutionary technique .They desire the benefit of straight teeth but sometimes are hesitant to commit to braces that will show. For these esthetically conscious children and adults, concealed Lingual orthodontics provides an excellent alternative to traditional braces. Another popular option among patients desiring cosmetic orthodontics is a combination of upper concealed and lower clear braces.
